This week, I thought I would try something a little different for the newsletter. I had the idea to do this in mid-April and thought I would save it for the first Friday of the month, but then I forgot last week. As this newsletter tends to be a study on the beauty of mundane things, I decided that once a month, I want to share a list of the things I found beautiful in the month before. Some things might be similar to my list of what got me through the month, but that list is focused more on utility, while this list is devoted entirely to aesthetic appreciation. I hope you enjoy reading about the moments of beauty I experienced, and that your eyes might open just a little wider to the many unexpected forms of beauty around you this month.
Things I Found Beautiful in April
Tiny seedlings starting to sprout and reminding me that renewal is always possible
A week of wearing shorts in April, heretofore unheard of in all the years of my Wisconsin existence
Opening the windows immediately upon waking, letting in the sun and fresh air, both of which I have missed deeply
Tiny buds on big trees, branches dotted with promises
The familiar but nearly forgotten swirl of milk in the first iced coffee of the season
It’s a short list, but things are beautiful all around and changing every day. I’m hoping to send out these lists on the first Friday of every month from now on, though I’ve already messed one up. They’ll be coming out semi-regularly, at any rate. I you feel like sharing, I’d love to hear about the little moments of beauty or joy you’ve experienced recently.
sounds of summer
I am a disappointment to so many
but the bees are coming back and
the harleys have come out of hibernation
some will win and some will lose
as far as lives go
mine really isn’t so bad
but that won’t stop me from playing the victim
if reverse psycology worked I’d be a champion
I’ve descended into a life
I never thought I wanted
every day I hear my sophomore year
social studies teacher’s voice in my ear
fail to plan, plan to fail
I’m planning to fail at all of it
I’m realizing I don’t trust doctors
the chiropractor can fix all my problems
I’m sure of it
your issues are in your tissues, they say
my problems run deep
in my blood and in my bones
thank god I pay someone to move them around
That’s all from me today. I hope you find something beautiful to appreciate today. Happy Mother’s Day to those that celebrate and happy weekend-in-May to those that don’t. See you next Friday!
